Promoting your child's oral language

Oral language — talking and listening — is the foundation for reading, writing, learning and friendships. The richer the conversation around your child, the stronger that foundation becomes.

Everyday ways to boost oral language

  • Narrate daily routines — talk through what you're doing and seeing.
  • Ask open-ended questions that need more than a yes/no answer.
  • Follow your child's lead and talk about what interests them.
  • Introduce new and interesting words, then use them again later.
  • Give plenty of time to respond and really listen to the answer.

💡 Tip

Quality conversations beat quantity of words. Back-and-forth 'serve and return' chats do the most for language growth.

Every chat, question and shared story is an investment in your child's communication. If you'd like tailored ideas for your child, our speech pathologists are always happy to help.
