By 5–6 years of age, children understand a lot of words. They are able to communicate clearly and be easily understood by others — including people outside the family. This is an exciting stage where language really starts to support learning at school.
What you might notice
- Following longer, more complex instructions with several steps.
- Using grammatically correct sentences most of the time.
- Telling simple stories with a beginning, middle and end.
- Producing most speech sounds clearly, so strangers understand them.
- Taking turns in conversation and staying on topic.
💡 Tip
Milestones are a guide, not a race. Every child develops at their own pace.
