Cooking + Communication

The kitchen is a fantastic, hands-on classroom for building language. Cooking together naturally weaves in new vocabulary, sequencing, following instructions and lots of shared conversation.

Stir language into the recipe

  • Name ingredients and tools as you go — bowl, whisk, measure, pour.
  • Use sequencing words: first, next, then, after that, finally.
  • Follow the recipe steps together to practise listening and instructions.
  • Describe textures, smells and tastes — sticky, crunchy, sweet, warm.
  • Talk about changes: 'What happened when we added the heat?'

💡 Tip

Let your child be the 'chef' and tell you the steps. Putting them in charge of the instructions builds expressive language and confidence.

Best of all, you get a tasty result to talk about afterwards. Cooking turns everyday routines into rich communication moments.
