Food for thought…
Everyday outings — like a trip to a restaurant or café — are full of natural opportunities to grow your child's communication.

Everyday outings are full of natural opportunities to grow your child's communication — and dining out is one of the best. A trip to a restaurant or café is rich with new vocabulary, social routines and chances to make choices.
Make mealtimes meaningful
- Read the menu together and talk about the options.
- Encourage your child to order for themselves when they're ready.
- Talk about flavours, textures and temperatures — describing words galore!
- Practise polite social phrases like 'please', 'thank you' and 'excuse me'.
- Chat about what's happening around you to build observation and conversation.
💡 Tip
Offer choices ('Would you like water or juice?') to give your child a reason to communicate and a sense of control.
You don't need flashcards or worksheets to support language. The real world — and a shared plate of food — does a wonderful job.
