Food for thought…

Everyday outings are full of natural opportunities to grow your child's communication — and dining out is one of the best. A trip to a restaurant or café is rich with new vocabulary, social routines and chances to make choices.

Make mealtimes meaningful

  • Read the menu together and talk about the options.
  • Encourage your child to order for themselves when they're ready.
  • Talk about flavours, textures and temperatures — describing words galore!
  • Practise polite social phrases like 'please', 'thank you' and 'excuse me'.
  • Chat about what's happening around you to build observation and conversation.

💡 Tip

Offer choices ('Would you like water or juice?') to give your child a reason to communicate and a sense of control.

You don't need flashcards or worksheets to support language. The real world — and a shared plate of food — does a wonderful job.
